Wow! Zero to 100km/h in 4.5 seconds from hardcore AMG SUV

THE square-jawed Mercedes G-Class will welcome a brawny V8 derivative later this year.

With an ability to sprint from standstill to 100km/h in 4.5 seconds, the Mercedes-AMG G63 will be packing 430 kilowatts and 850 Newton metres of torque when it arrives late this year.

Prices are yet to be revealed, but the current version starts from $235,410.

Delivering all that power is AMG's 4.0-litre V8 biturbo engine which feature a rear-biased all-wheel drive (40:60) with three differential locks and nine-speed automatic transmission.

NEW G-CLASS REVEALED IN DETROIT

Riding on 22-inch alloys, red brake callipers and dual side exhaust pipes ensures onlookers will know this SUV is something special.

It will have a maximum speed of 220 km/h, or 240 km/h with the AMG Driver's package.

There is a trade-off for all that mumbo...fuel consumption is 13.2 litres/100 km on average.

For those still keen to tackle the tough stuff, AMG ensured it was no claytons SUV. There are coil springs all-round with adaptive adjustable damping standard equipment.

The damping is adjusted individually for each wheel, and depends on the driving style, the road surface and the selected suspension setting.

While on the bitumen, drivers can choose between "Comfort", "Sport", "Sport+" or "Individual" drive modes, while off-road there are options for "Sand", "Trail" and "Rock".

Full details of this latest derivative have just been released after the all-new G-Class received a Hollywood welcome at Detroit motor show last month from Arnold Schwarzenegger.

"The new AMG G 63 brings driving performance to the segment of unadulterated off-road vehicles in unexpected form," says the boss of Mercedes-AMG, Tobias Moers.

"It was important for us to tie in with the original character on account of the cult status the G63 enjoys with our customers and fans.

"The vehicle has nevertheless reached a completely new dimension in terms of technology with the 4.0-litre V8 biturbo engine as well as in combination with the off-road characteristics, the agility and the vehicle dynamics achieved.

"This applies to the entire G-Class model series. Mercedes-AMG is responsible for their suspension and chassis development as well as V8 competence."
