Mum dies days after cancer diagnosis

SKY Sports presenter Simon Thomas has today revealed his wife died of leukaemia - just three days after her devastating diagnosis.

The 44-year-old said he was "crushed with indescribable pain" as he announced the death of his wife Gemma, 40, yesterday morning. She died overnight in hospital surrounded by her friends and family, The Sun reports.

Simon wrote on Twitter: "Today I am crushed with indescribable pain.

"Just three days after falling ill with Acute Myloid Leukaemia, my dear wife Gemma passed away yesterday evening surrounded by her family and friends.

"If you are a prayer - pray for my boy Ethan. 8yrs, precious and in bits. Thank you."

Hundreds of tributes have flooded in for the mum-of-one.

 

 

BBC Breakfast presenter Dan Walker said: "There are no words. So sorry to hear my friend. Hold him close."

ITV's This Morning presenter Phillip Schofield‏ said: "I'm so deeply sorry to hear your heartbreaking news. Sending lots of love to you, your son and your family x".

Ex-Sky Sports presenter Charlie Webster said: "Simon, sending and you and Ethan love and all my prayers. I am so very sorry. If there is anything I can do, I'm here."

Simon's club Norwich City FC said: "Simon, the thoughts of everybody at Norwich City are with yourself, Ethan and everyone else who knew and loved Gemma at this sad time."

 

 

Aston Villa FC said: "So sorry to hear of your loss, Simon. Our thoughts are with you and your son, Ethan, at this incredibly difficult time."

TalkSport's Adan Virgo said: "So sorry about your loss thoughts are with you and your son Ethan at this time."

Ex-England footballer Michael Ball said: "Heartbreaking. So sorry to hear this. My thoughts & prayers are with you and your family."

Steph Houghton MBE, Manchester City and England Captain for Team GB, said: "There are no words Simon... sending all my love to you and Ethan."

Harlequins rugby player Danny Care said: "Thinking of you mate. So sorry."

The couple lived in Caversham, Berkshire, together with their eight-year-old son Ethan.

According to her Facebook page, Gemma studied at the University of Sheffield before going on to work at the electoral commission.

Norfolk-born Thomas joined Blue Peter in 1999, replacing Richard Bacon, and worked alongside the likes of Konnie Huq, Matt Baker and Zoe Salmon during his six years on the BBC children's show.

He left for Sky Sports in 2005 and has worked on a number of projects, most recently presenting live Premier League coverage for the channel.
