SHANE van Gisbergen says he will look to help Red Bull teammate Jamie Whincup's drivers' championship cause this weekend in the penultimate Supercars round in Pukekohe.
While the defending champion is all but out of the running, Whincup narrowly leads DJR Team Penske pair Fabian Coulthard and Scott McLaughlin, with just 27 points between them.
"It's been discussed,” Kiwi van Gisbergen said.
"The fight at the front between the top three or four is super close and we're a bit out of it.
"So if I can't win, the priority is for a team's car to win and I'll be doing what I can to help Jamie.”
That said, despite sitting almost 200 points in arrears of six-time winner Whincup, van Gisbergen isn't quite throwing in the towel himself just yet.
"I haven't given up myself yet. We're a long way out, but if we have a good weekend here and still in range in Newcastle (in the final round), then who knows?” he said.
Van Gisbergen is looking forward to racing back on home soil, even if the forecast is for rain - and plenty of it.
"The weather is going to be crazy if it comes, especially with the new surface,” he said.
"I've raced there a lot of times in the wet growing up, but now with the surface it might be a bit different.
"We'll have to see what happens, but normally the racing is pretty crazy when it's wet, there are lots of accidents and action, so there should be a lot going on.”
Leaderboard: 1. Jamie Whincup 2580, 2. Fabian Coulthard 2563, 3. Scott McLaughlin 2553, 4. Chaz Mostert 2454, 5. Shane van Gisbergen 2391
