You might not have a cute alpaca for sale like Sally McDonald last year, but it’s likely that you have lots of clutter you’d like to lose in the 2015 Garage Sale Trail.

Garage sale: Everything must go (including the garage)

WHEN Mackay guy John Ohl had a garage sale a few years back, he sold everything. Including the garage. And the house.

Mr Ohl, responding to an Australian Regional Media Facebook post, said he was originally just trying to get rid of stuff he didn't need, but a visiting browser asked if the house was for sale.

"I said 'name a price' and it was above what I would have asked on the market so I said you come up with the money and you got it."

It's not the weirdest sale or attempted sale out of a garage: Participants in the annual Garage Sale Trail last year listed a rocket-powered jetpack, a terrace house in Bondi and a $10,000 Star Wars collection.

One sale even had a couple of grandpas looking for a good home.

Already listed for this year's "decluttering" event - scheduled for October 24 - are a 1971 MG and a collection of historical phones - from a wall-mounted wooden crank phone to yesterday's mobile models.

The Garage Sale Trail, a national program backed by local councils, aims to get people reusing each other's unwanted gear, helping the environment and giving charities a hand while clearing space for summer.

The October Garage Sale Trail is supported by Ipswich Advertiser. Why not declutter all year round - book a garage sale or sell individual items for free in print & online with Ipswich Advertiser Classifieds.

Now in its fifth year, Garage Sale Trail is Australia's largest annual garage sale, expected to involve more than 400,000 participants.

"Decluttering" is the theme this year.

Co-founder Darryl Nichols says the event's popularity is due in part to the fact that it provides motivation - and a deadline - for individuals and families who want to declutter.

"From the time they register for free online at www.garagesaletrail.com.au, sellers have about four to six weeks to prepare for the big day of simultaneous garage sales around Australia … no procrastination allowed!" Mr Nichols said.
