Watts beats ALP, One Nation to widen gap

TREVOR Watts looks set to achieve a remarkable victory in Toowoomba North, streaking away from his long-time sparring partner Kerry Shine in the primary vote.

In what was tipped by many to be a close battle in the key marginal electorate, Mr Watts is expected to defeat a strong ALP campaign and fend off One Nation protest votes.

Trevor Watts yesterday paid tribute to his family and volunteers after all but sealing an extraordinary win in Toowoomba North in the state election.

Tipped as a marginal seat with the LNP holding it with a margin of just 1.6 per cent, Mr Watts is now expected to achieve 55 per cent of the two-party summary after winning more than 42 per cent of the primary vote.

Heading into his third term in parliament, he said the work from his campaign team helped fight against a strong grass-roots campaign from the ALP and a wave of protest votes for One Nation.

"On my analysis, our margin has increased - I think I'll be on 55% on two-party preferred," Mr Watts said.

"I've had an awesome team of volunteers and I've got some great office staff and a wonderful family who all have contributed to make sure we had a local campaign."

Mr Watts also improved his polling in traditional Labor booths like Wilsonton and Newtown.
