Walters backing Reed and Gillett for glory days

BRONCOS legend Kerrod Walters says ex-Bribie Island juniors Matt Gillett and Jack Reed are helping lead the charge towards Brisbane's first NRL premiership in nine years.

Both have been strong, but Reed has been particularly good of late after letting his form slip earlier in the season.

It seems Broncos coach Wayne Bennett has turned the former Bribie Island Warrigal around, getting the best out of him week in, week out.

The 25-year-old was outstanding against the Dragons on Friday night, running for 80m, but it has been his defence that has most impressed Walters.

"Jack has been going very well this year," he said.

"Bennett knows the strengths off all his players and is good at getting the best out of everyone and that is obviously the case with Jack.

"I know that he is held in very high regard among both current and past players and always gets the job done."

Walters is equally as impressed with Gillett, whose outstanding year has been highlighted by a strong Origin series.

"Gillett has been going very well too," Walters said.

"They have four good back-rowers there and that has worked very well for the Broncos this year.

"Matt is a great all-round player and is full of quality."

Walters said although Brisbane had been electric in attack, its defence was what had the side primed for a shot at the premiership.

"Their commitment in defence has been outstanding and that is the key," he said.

"They have been limiting teams to 12 points and if they do that they are going to win.

"The losses to Manly and the Bulldogs were reality checks.

"I think there are only four teams that can win it though - the Cowboys, Souths, Roosters and the Broncos."
