AN 18-year-old Casino woman, who has been charged with dangerous driving causing the death of the four-year-old daughter of a local police sergeant she was babysitting at the time, has appeared before Casino Local Court today.

Courteney Pearl Matthews appeared calm during the brief hearing, wearing black and flanked by four family members and her solicitor. 

Also present in the courtroom were the visibly distressed parents of four-year-old Elle Underhill, who died in December last year when the car Ms Matthews was driving collided with another vehicle on the Bruxner Highway east of Casino. 

Following the incident Ms Matthews was charged with dangerous driving occasioning death, dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm and negligent driving occasioning death.

She did not enter a plea to the charges.



On the afternoon of December 18 last year, Ms Matthews was driving Elle, her two-year-old sister and another girl, aged 7, between Casino and Lismore when the Mazda 323 she was driving allegedly struck a Subaru Liberty, tearing the Mazda in half.

The crash killed Elle and injured her sister, while the seven-year-old was treated for shock.

The 81-year-old driver of the Subaru was also injured and taken to Lismore Base Hospital with chest injuries. 

Magistrate R Denes ordered the case be adjourned to Lismore Local Court on September 20.
