Snake found hiding out in souvenir shop

A SNAKE that was found hiding among toy reptiles at a Kuranda shop was found to be very much alive - and venomous.

Cairns Snake Removals was called to the rainforest village earlier this week to remove a red-bellied black snake from a souvenir store.

The venomous creature was found by the shop owner among a display of toy snakes, crocodiles, spiders and other toys.

David Walton from Cairns Snake Removals believed the animal may have found its way inside the store from underneath the building, or even hitchhiked on-board a vehicle that may have pulled up on the street outside.

"Red-bellied black snakes are venomous, but not particularly dangerous," he said.

"But if you see one, you don't necessarily want to be bitten by one. A snake like that, though, they're pretty quick to move."
