Unique Bovine Johne's Disease strain found at Bajool

TESTING of Bovine Johne's Disease (BJD) samples from Bajool stud Rockley Brahman's have indicated it is a strain never found before in Australia.

This has led to speculation that the strain arrived from overseas and has brought biosecurity controls into question.

Biosecurity Queensland chief biosecurity officer Dr Jim Thompson said despite these results it was too early to determine the origin of the strain.

"As part of Biosecurity Queensland's commitment to the bovine Johne's disease (BJD) response, further testing on samples was conducted to help determine the strain of the infection," Dr Thompson said.

"Preliminary results indicate the bison strain of BJD, which has not been previously found in Australia.

"Further testing will need to be conducted to substantiate the initial findings of the bison strain - and until this is completed, we cannot speculate on the origin of the infection."

He said there are two known strains of Johne's disease in Australia, the cattle strain and the sheep strain.

"Bison strains have been reported in North America, India and Africa, and are known to cause disease," Dr Thompson said.

"The suggested findings will not impact, or change the ongoing BJD disease investigation and response in Queensland."
