"Overgrown mess" by highway a threat to homes, resident says

AN UNKEPT portion of land off a Pacific Highway exit road onto Kennedy Dr in Tweed Heads West is proving an eyesore and hazard for residents after being left to grow out of control.

Barrett St resident Gayle Thew, whose unit backs onto the unruly patch of land, has been trying since December 2014 to have the land tended to.

Mrs Thew rang council and State Government, followed by Roads and Maritime Services (RMS), after being advised they were responsible for the section of land.

Ten months has passed and Mrs Thew has still been unable to have the overgrown bushland tended to and is concerned for the safety of her home and that of other residents.

"It's an absolute disgrace. If someone threw a cigarette butt, it could be a fire hazard," Mrs Thew said.

"It's a haven for rubbish, and tenants just throw stuff over the fence.

"Ants invade my place and it's full of midges, mosquitoes and rats. It's a complete mess."

Mrs Thew said despite multiple calls to RMS, everyone had passed the buck.

The RMS has been invited to respond to Mrs Threw's comments.
