IT'S spring and it's time to clear the clutter from our lives - and you can join hundreds of thousands of Australians in a huge garage sale event next month.

The Garage Sale Trail, a national program backed by local councils, aims to get people reusing each other's unwanted gear, helping the environment and giving charities a hand along the way.

"Decluttering" is a theme of Garage Sale Trail on Saturday October 24.

Co-founder of the program Darryl Nichols said the event's popularity provided motivation - and a deadline - for people who wanted to declutter. "From the time they register for free online at, sellers have about four to six weeks to prepare for the big day of simultaneous garage sales around Australia … no procrastination allowed!" he said.

Now in its fifth year, Garage Sale Trail is expected to involve upwards of 400,000 participants this year in more than 10,000 garage sales.

The October Garage Sale Trail is supported by the Ipswich Advertiser. Why not unclutter all year round - you can sell individual items for free in print & online with Ipswich Advertiser Classifieds.

Co-founder Andrew Valder said Garage Sale Trail had a serious message delivered in a fun way. "Yes, it's a great way to find a unique bargain and meet your neighbours, but it's so much more than that. The simple act of having a garage sale is used as a way to encourage reuse and place a value on the world's resources," he said.

Registration is now open and includes a seller webpage with access to digital promotional materials. Sellers who register before September 25 will receive a free promotional pack with a swag of goodies.

Do it with a friend

Why go it alone with a garage sale when you can maximise the response by working with a friend?

Many participants in the Garage Sale Trail combine their unwanted goods with family, friends and neighbours and make an event of it.

Organisers say it is a fun and social way to promote reuse, reduce waste to landfill, meet the neighbours and raise funds.

It's free to get involved and registration is open to households, community groups, schools, businesses, makers and creators.

Last year, more than 70,000 sellers took part. Including shoppers and browsers, an estimated 350,000 people were involved in Garage Sale Trail 2014.
