UPDATE: Man charged after train wagon electrocution

UPDATE: Bundaberg Police have today issued a 19-year-old Bundaberg man a Notice to Appear in relation to the death of Michael Booker, who died while climbing a train engine early Sunday morning.

Mr Booker was electrocuted when he came into contact with overhead power lines.

Mr Booker was with a friend at the time of his death and Queensland Rail have claimed the pair were trespassing.

Police have charged the 19 year old with one count of Enter Premises to commit indictable offence and he is scheduled to appear in Bundaberg Magistrates Court on September 2.

Police are continuing investigations to assist the Coroner.

EARLIER: A 19-YEAR-old man has died after being electrocuted while climbing over a train engine in McLean St.

The teen came into contact with overhead wires at the Queensland Rail holding yard in inner Bundaberg.

Queensland Rail said the man was trespassing at the McLean St location when the accident happened at about 1.30am.

"We extend our deepest sympathies to the friends and family of this young man," a Queensland Rail spokesperson said.

The Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) and Queensland Police Service attended the scene, along with Queensland Rail staff.

QAS senior operations supervisor Martin Kelly said the man's friend performed CPR before paramedics arrived on scene.

Our efforts went on for 35 minutes. Sadly, the man could not be revived.

 

The Queensland Rail spokesperson said the tragedy was a terrible reminder of the dangers of overhead power lines.

"Safety is our number one priority and we are pleading with people to ensure they stay safe and do not trespass on the rail network," the spokesperson said.

A freight train was delayed close to three hours as a result of this incident.

No further impact to rail traffic is anticipated.
