Teacher’s top tips
IPSWICH Grammar School's head of English, John Acutt, was recently chosen to share his teaching wisdom at an international conference in Canberra.
Mr Acutt addressed teachers from across the country, offering his tips on how to help male students express emotion and write creatively in his presentation, titled Themes, metaphors and motifs: Linking students' life worlds to English.
"It's a great opportunity because you usually come back with lots of ideas to implement in the classroom," he said.
"The process I have gives students a solid plan and techniques that turn an ordinary piece of writing into a great piece of writing."
The teacher of more than 30 years' experience said the techniques he used often stuck with students, helping them communicate later in life.
The process involves getting students to colour code each part of their writing such as the introduction, rising action, climax and resolution so they can see if the story balances well.
"It's a great way to get boys especially to explore their own feelings in a positive way," he said.
