Taufua trio paves way for big win

A HAT-TRICK to powerful Manly winger Jorge Taufua has given the Sea Eagles a 28-16 win over the Sharks, but - more importantly - breathed life into their stuttering premiership campaign.

The win at Brookvale Oval lifted the Sea Eagles off the bottom of the ladder and now they are just four competition points outside the top eight.

Taufua opened his account by proving too strong for opposite Michael Gordon, barging his way over in the eighth minute, before scoring from a Kieran Foran kick in the 20th minute.

Sharks winger Sosaia Feki responded with an impressive finish of his own to dot down inside the left-hand corner, just two minutes from half-time, for the visitors to trail 10-4 at the break.

But the Sea Eagles started the second half on fire, with Taufua grabbing his second from a Brett Stewart kick, the veteran fullback winning man-of-the-match honours. Manly halfback Daly Cherry-Evans then ran the ball himself near the Sharks line to score, giving a 22-4 lead after 53 minutes.

The Sharks hit back with big prop Andrew Fifita bursting over to score with 10 minutes left.

But Taufua's third just three minutes later - courtesy of a beautiful Stewart cut-out pass - secured the much-needed win for the hosts.
