Jail for Rocky liquor thief who stole vodka, rum, bourbon

A ROCKHAMPTON man who stole close to five litres of spirits from two businesses over three separate days maintains he doesn't have a problem with alcohol.

Anthony William Butler, 21, pleaded guilty in Rockhampton Magistrates Court this week to three counts of stealing and one count each of possessing drug-related utensils, possessing utensils used in the commission of a crime and failing to appear following a stealing spree beginning in May.

The court heard Butler targeted the BWS store at Frenchville on May 30 and June 19 when he stole two one-litre bottles of Bundaberg Rum, a one-litre bottle of Smirnoff Vodka and a 700ml bottle of Wild Turkey bourbon over the two days to a value of $227.

He struck the Liquorland store at Berserker on August 8 when he leant from the window of a car in the drive-through browsing lane and took a 700ml bottle of Jim Beam bourbon.

A defence lawyer for Butler said the defendant insisted he did not have a drinking problem.

"I'm glad he doesn't think that," Magistrate Mark Morrow said.

Butler was sentenced to one month in prison, suspended for 12 months, fined $300 and ordered to pay compensation.
