Surfers refuse to exit water after sharks sighted

Police have requested all swimmers and surfers to please follow instructions to leave the water if instructed and be aware of shark alarms issued by lifesavers.

It has now been confirmed the surfers left the water after they finally realised what was happening and the imminent threat.

At 7am this morning DPI helicopter patrols spotted two three metre great whites swimming among the surfers at North Wall, Lighthouse Beach.

Police are now at the scene as three surfers are refusing to leave the water.

North Coast Lifesaving tweeted the following:

SWDPI aerial team advise 3 sharks @ Lighthouse Beach, Ballina - 1 x 2.5m Bull Shark & 2 White Sharks around 3m. Surfers & swimmers cleared.
