Sunshine Coast man amongst Australian Survivor hopefuls

SUNSHINE Coast courier driver Des is one of 24 contestants who will compete in the first ever season of Australian Survivor.

The 59-year-old will compete against people half his age in the reality show, which sees contestants marooned on a tropical island (in this case Samoa) with little more than the clothes on their backs.

Channel 10's statement describes the father-of-three as "a classic Aussie bloke who loves to have a laugh" and "a loyal man who has been married for 37 years and calls his wife The Queen".

Des also served in the army for seven years, which should put him in good stead to cope with the challenges of living rough.

The show's other contestants range in age from 23 to 62 and come from diverse professions including a private investigator, a former professional cricketer, a criminal lawyer and a firefighter.

"More than 15,000 Australians applied to be part of this spectacular, dramatic and compelling new series," Ten's Chief Programming Officer Beverley McGarvey said.

"The 24 people we've selected are incredible and represent one of the best casts we have ever assembled for a reality series."

The grand final winner will go home with half a million dollars in prize money.

Jonathan LaPaglia will host the series, which is expected to air later this year.
