Stressed mum who went on stealing spree lands in jail

A TOOWOOMBA mum who went on a stealing spree as a way of dealing with stresses in her life has been jailed.

Katrina Ann Taylor had targeted stores in Grand Central Shopping Centre from which she stole a range of cosmetics, clothing and costume jewellery over two days in September last year.

On each occasion she had removed packaging before placing the items in her handbag and walking out without paying, Toowoomba Magistrates Court heard.

She was captured by store CCTV cameras, police prosecutor Julia Wheaton told the court.

In March last year, a concerned woman motorist had stopped to pick up Taylor who was dressed in pyjamas and walking on a Sunshine Coast road, Senior Constable Wheaton said.

The victim had been recharging her $984 mobile phone in the car at the time which Taylor had taken when the woman stopped to get and pay for fuel.

The victim hadn't noticed her phone missing until, out of concern, she went to call police after dropping off her passenger a short distance away, the court heard.

When spoken to by police in July, Taylor said she hadn't been on the Sunshine Coast for two years but investigations found she had absconded from a hospital just before being picked up by the woman victim, Snr Const. Wheaton said.

Taylor appeared in custody to plead guilty to all matters as well as to transferring $2450 from her then Toowoomba employer's account into her own in December last year which she had since repaid.

Her solicitor Claire Graham said her client had been diagnosed with borderline personality disorder and had committed the offences due to stresses in her life at the time.

Noting she had a history of offending, Magistrate Roger Stark declared 33 days she had spent in custody as time served and sentenced Taylor to six months in jail, to be released on parole on May 16.
