Socceroos go on attack for Cup squad

FOOTBALL: Socceroos coach Ange Postecoglou has welcomed back Asian Cup

heroes Robbie Kruse and Massimo Luongo, as well as attacking midfielder Tom Rogic for next month's World Cup qualifiers against Bangladesh and Tajikistan.

Rogic has been dogged by a persistent groin complaint and hasn't played for Australia since a 4-3 loss to Ecuador in London more than a year ago. The nine-cap midfielder returned to the pitch in recent weeks and scored for Celtic in their recent Scottish Premier League win over Partick Thistle.

With Rogic back - and Kruse and Luongo, both of whom missed the 2-1 World Cup qualifying win over Kyrgyzstan in June - Postecoglou has a mouth-watering array of goal-scoring options at his disposal.

"It's a positive that we've been able to recall Massimo, Robbie and Tom after they missed recent matches. They add attacking options to the squad for the two matches in Perth and Dushanbe," Postecoglou said.

"When you add them to the likes of Tim Cahill, Mat Leckie, Tomi Juric, Nathan Burns and Tommy Oar, the fans in Perth have a lot to get excited about."

As he usually does, Postecoglou has again pulled a couple of names from left-field to increase the squad's depth.

With No.2 gloveman Mitch Langerak injured, the coach has named Polish-born 26-year-old Alex Cisak as a back-up for first-choice keeper Mat Ryan and Adam Federici, while 22-year-old Jackson Irvine, who plays for Ross County in Scotland, returns nearly two years after making his debut for the national side against Canada in October 2013.

Squad:

Aziz Behich, Nathan Burns, Tim Cahill, Alex Cisak, Jason Davidson, Tarek Elrich, Adam Federici, Jackson Irvine, Mile Jedinak (capt), Tomi Juric, Robbie Kruse, Mathew Leckie, Massimo Luongo, Ryan McGowan, Matt McKay, Mark Milligan, Aaron Mooy, Tommy Oar, Tom Rogic, Mat Ryan, Matthew Spiranovic, Alex Wilkinson, Bailey Wright.
