POLICE have arrested six male Schoolies overnight for drug possession.

Official celebrations kicked off for students last night and while police say they are generally pleased with the behaviour, a number of them have stirred trouble.

The arrests are a slight improvement to last year when eight Schoolies were arrested on the first night.

There were 12 people arrested on 24 charges which were non-schoolies.

The majority of the non-schoolies arrested related to drug offences.

The Bulletin was down at the Esplande this morning where a number of small groups of Schoolies and Toolies were spotted soaking up the sunrise on the beach.
