SCHOOL holiday time should see families looking for healthy and easy-to-make meals, with vegetables and salad at value-for-money prices and seasonal fruit the best snack alternative.
New season asparagus is on the shelves and is reasonably priced along with good quality Asian vegetables, beetroot, cabbage, cauliflower, carrot, celery, eggplant, fennel, leeks, snow pears, silverbeet, potatoes and sweet potatoes.
Beans and broccoli have firmed in price but are still considered good value.
Once-cheap onions are firmly priced and pumpkin is expensive. You can expect to pay firm prices for brussels sprouts, parsnips, squash, sweet corn, zucchinis and mushrooms.
Australian capsicums are starting to firm in price as the season ends but will soon be joined on the shelves by New Zealand stock. Store them in an airtight plastic bag in the fridge crisper.

Expect to pay firm prices for good quality apples, bananas, watermelon, pears, pineapples and passionfruit. Limes, lemons, raspberries and US grapes and stonefruit are expensive.
