Rosie Batty says Eddie McGuire comments victimise women

ROSIE Batty says it's time for high-profile Australians to stop making jokes that demean and victimise women.

The dedicated anti-domestic violence campaigner called AFL commentator Eddie McGuire out this morning for a "joke" implying he wanted respected Fairfax football journalist Caroline Wilson held under water.

"I think we've moved past understanding racist jokes but clearly we haven't moved past sexist jokes and recognising they are harmful," Ms Batty said while handing over a family law system reform petition to the Liberals, Labor and the Greens a short while ago.

"I'm sure people will be making Eddie accountable for his comments and I'm sure he'll reflect and understand, again, it's not appropriate."

The Collingwood football club president and Nine Network executive used a fundraiser to say he would pay $50,000 to see Wilson stay under a pool of iced water.

He then said he would charge an extra $10,000 for people  "to stand around the outside and bomb her."

McGuire this morning issued a general apology for making the comments but he has so far declined to say sorry to Wilson.

Wilson said the statements "crossed the line".

"Often, we have jousted in the past many times and on this one, I do think he probably crossed the line and I didn't like the language and I think it's such a pity they need to default to that vicious language and I don't accept that it was playful banter," Wilson told The Age.

"It's like casual racism.

"Casual violent language might be meant as a joke but I really thought 'I wonder how many times do we have to draw this line in the sand between what is a joke and what is completely unacceptable'." - ARM NEWSDESK
