Rockhampton cook through to MasterChef semi-final

HARRY Foster now has a one in three chance of becoming Australia's next MasterChef champion.

The Rockhampton-born bartender is one of three finalists vying for a spot in the reality cooking show's grand final.

He'll compete against fellow Queenslanders Matt Sinclair and Elena Duggan in tonight's semi-final.

His mother Ria McClelland couldn't be prouder of what her son has achieved at the age of 22.

"It's been amazing really for someone so young; I still think of him as a little boy," she told the Bulletin.

"He cooks the most amazing things on the show. I've never seen him cook anything like that here (at home).

"He's always had an interest in food and cooking, especially seafood and curries. Of course living by the sea he has developed that love of seafood. His father had a beach house near Seaforth near Mackay and he spend a lot of time up there. He's been fishing and crabbing all his life."

Ms McClelland said a lot of MasterChef viewers wouldn't know he's also a wildlife lover and became a wildlife carer after moving to the Sunshine Coast in 2010 with her and his younger brother Patrick.

"He's always had an interest in snakes. I used to work for the National Parks and Wildlife Service, so I had a fair idea what they were but he didn't, which was the frightening thing," she laughed.

"He's very keen on the environment. He loves animals and photography."

Tonight's show will see Harry, Matt and Elena prepare a main course and a dessert for 20 guests, as well as the three judges.

They will have four hours to prepare, with access to an open pantry and the garden, and mentor Shannon Bennett will be running the pass.

"I'm looking forward to it (the semi-final). It's been a long road for him," Ms McClelland said.

"His focus and will to keep going, and to stay in the race, it's been amazing really."

The MasterChef semi-final airs tonight at 7.30pm on Channel 10.
