Riverside miner rushed to surgery after severe head injury

UPDATE: It has been confirmed the miner injured in a Goonyella Riverside incident has died

A BMA worker was badly injured on-site at Goonyella Riverside mine on Saturday morning, rushed into extensive emergency surgery.

He is a husband and father of a 11-month-old baby boy.

A BMA spokesman confirmed the incident.

Queensland Ambulance Service was called to the site about 1am Saturday morning.

The 31-year-old man is believed to have sustained a severe head injury.

"BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA) confirms that an incident occurred at Goonyellla Riverside Mine today (Saturday), which resulted in a serious injury to one of our people," the spokesman said.

"We understand that the individual remains in a critical condition at Townsville Hospital, following surgery on Saturday afternoon.

"Our highest priority remains for his care and support and that of his family, as well as our colleagues.

"BMA is working closely with the relevant authorities on this incident."

Isaac Mayor Anne Baker said it was terrible news that would be felt throughout the whole community.

"My heart goes out to the family," she said.

"I know every single mining family will be thinking of them and wishing them well."

The injured worker was first taken to Mackay Base Hospital and then to Townsville Base Hospital for the emergency surgery.
