Qld refuses to match Gateway funds and may use tolls
THE state government has refused to match a $718 million offer by the Commonwealth to upgrade the Gateway Motorway and has not ruled out using tolls to fund the project.
Treasurer Wayne Swan has set aside money in Tuesday's federal budget to fund an upgrade of the highway on the condition the state government matches it dollar for dollar.
The work would widen the Gateway Motorway from four to six lanes between Nudgee Road and Deagon Deviation, as well as put in cycling lanes.
The federal government says the upgrade has been costed at $1.3 billion. They are willing to split the funding in half with the state government, who have previously asked for the Commonwealth to fund 80 per cent of the project.
Mr Swan said his offer was conditional on the state government guaranteeing they will not toll the road to raise money for their share of the project.
