Qld mayors focus on 2028 Olympic Games bid

THERE is still along way to go before Queensland's Olympic dream becomes a reality if the organised chaos witnessed for the Story Bridge 75th anniversary celebrations is anything to go by.

Brisbane City Council has come under fire for the way the celebration at the weekend was organised, with more than 70,000 people packing the River City's iconic bridge and causing widespread congestion.

But that has not distracted south-east mayors from pushing ahead with their plan for the region to make a bid to host the 2028 Olympic Games.

The regionally-based games would mean Olympic events would be held across the south-east including at the Sunshine Coast, Toowoomba, Ipswich and the Scenic Rim.

Council of Mayors chair Graham Quirk said on Monday the organisation had met with London Olympics boss Lord Sebastian Coe to discuss the mooted proposal.

But he said there was still a long way to go before any official bid is placed on the table.

"Clearly he has so much practical experience in bidding for the Olympics and in running the Olympic Games," he said.

"There has been significant benefit come to London as a result of those games.

"One of the most telling things he said to us was that London had seen a drop of 1.2% in its unemployment rate which they believe is directly attributed to the Olympic Games."

Cr Quirk said the Council of Mayors would be working over the next 12 months to draw up a feasibility plan surrounding the region hosting the games.

He said any discussion with the state and federal governments would not happen until then, but stressed it would have to be a national bid for the plan to succeed.
