Qld Health investigates 2011 legionnaires' death at Wesley

THE hospital at the centre of a legionnaires' disease outbreak had a patient die from contracting the same disease at the facility in 2011.

Queensland Health will investigate any links between the hospital-borne diagnosis in October, 2011, and two diagnosis this year, which left one man dead and another woman in intensive care.

The Wesley Hospital received all clear results for part of the hospital on Tuesday after it tested the water system in its east wing.

The Auchenflower hospital is still waiting the results of testing carried out in it's two remaining departments.

Queensland Health is investigating whether testing of hot water systems, potential breeding grounds for Legionella bacteria, should be made mandatory for all hospitals.

Queensland chief health officer Dr Jeannette Young is also looking into why a pathology department failed to comply with medical policy when it did not notify the public health unit about the Wesley Hospital's first legionnaires' disease diagnosis last month.

Dr Young revealed this morning a patient at the hospital in 2011 contracted the pneumonia-like disease and died.

All public and private hospitals have been instructed to carry out testing on hot water systems to identify traces of legionella bacteria.

While Dr Young said she expected the bacteria, which is ubiquitous, to be present, she confirmed some hospitals had returned variable but positive results.

Those results are expected to be published when Dr Young hands down her review into the legionnaires' outbreak and subsequent recommendations in September.

However, there had been no other positive human results for the disease.

Dr Young's report will include recommendations on policy options, advice on the notification system adequacy and analysis on legionella bacteria patterns.
