Police warning as suburb is targeted by thieves

BUNDABERG Police and detectives are investigating break-ins at three homes in Avenell Heights in the past five days.

It's a warning for community members to be vigilant about home security and report any suspicious activity to police.

Between 7.30am and 3.25pm Monday an offender entered a home in Gammie Ct, stealing electronic devices, jewellery and damaging a window.

Also on Monday between 8.20am and 10.30am an offender attempted to gain entry to a McCarthy Rd home by cutting a flyscreen and accessing the security flick lock, which was locked.

The offender made further attempts and managed to enter the house, removing items from various rooms before being disturbed by the home owners as they returned home.

The third offence happened between 10pm on July 14 and 7.30am on July 15 when an offender gained entry to a home in Vassey St through an unlocked back door.

They stole a wallet with personal accessories.

Police are urging residents to follow a few simple hints to avoid becoming victims.

Lock up every time - even if you are home, keep unattended doors and windows key locked or shut. Lock your vehicle whenever it is left unattended.

Don't leave your valuables on show - keep your valuables secure and don't leave wallets, handbags, car keys, computers and jewellery in view of others, including at home or in the vehicle.

Engrave your property - this makes your property difficult to sell and makes it easier for police to return your property if found. Keep a list of serial numbers and photograph valuables that can't be engraved.

Don't give burglars a place to hide - offenders are less likely to target a home if they think they can be seen, so trim garden trees and shrubs.

Report anything suspicious - keep a look out for suspicious behaviour and if in doubt contact your local police. Report all crimes as soon as possible, no matter how small as they may be part of a bigger problem.

If you have any information which may assist investigators, please contact Policelink on 131444 or Crime Stoppers anonymously via 1800 333 000 or online at 24 hours a day.
