PART of the Capricorn Highway was shut down by police overnight due to an emergency situation.

Just before 11pm, police declared an emergency situation under the Public Safety Preservation Act in Barcaldine due to an armed and wanted man.

The PSPA declaration covered the Landsborough Hwy between Barcaldine Isisford Rd to the intersection of Landsborough Hwy and Capricorn Hwy.

The Morning Bulletin understands all traffic was stopped as police searched for the man.

A Queensland Police spokesman said the PSPA had been revoked but the situation was ongoing.

"Police are liaising with the man at the moment," the spokesman said.

"Traffic should be moving again as the PSPA has been revoked."

While the spokesman could not provide details of what sparked the incident, he said the man in question was known to police.

Residents in the area are reminded to stay indoors and report any suspicious activity by calling '000'.
