Police hunt Bangladesh bowler over alleged child torture

POLICE in Bangladesh say they are determined to find missing Test cricketer Shahadat Hossain.

Arguably the country's best pace bowler, Hossain and his wife disappeared more than two weeks ago amid allegations they had tortured an 11-year-old housemaid who earlier this month was found seriously injured on the street in Dhaka.

"We have conducted raids in Shahadat's father's house and his in-laws' house," police told the BBC's Bengali Service.

"It doesn't matter if he's a national cricketer or not - he's an accused before the eyes of the law. We will track him down and put him before the court."

The 29-year-old has taken 70 wickets in 36 Tests - with best figures of 6-27 - and 47 wickets in 51 ODI matches.

Australia is due to play a three-day warm-up match against a Bangladesh Cricket Board XI in Fatullah from October 3, with the first Test to begin in Chittagong on October 9.
