MOTORCYCLE SPEEDWAY: Melissa Reeves rode on the speedway track for the first time on Saturday morning during the Kingaroy Junior Motorcycle Speedway Club come-and-try day.

Melissa has been riding for two years around the farm and enjoyed the challenge of riding on the track.

"It is slipperier than the gravel at home and there are other riders around that you have to watch out for,” she said.

The next challenge for Melissa is to learn the different skills of speedway, like sliding.

Kids of all ages were ready to learn new skills and have fun at the come-and-try day.

President of the club, Simon Rogerson, said it was the most successful day the club has had.

"We are really happy with the turnout with 10 kids riding, which is brilliant and the most we have ever had,” he said.

Nine-year-old Sean McCann started the day riding with training wheels on his pee wee bike.

During the day he became confident and is now able to ride on two wheels.

"He started with training wheels on and we took the wheels off and he is riding by himself round the track here,” Rogerson said.

"He only wanted to stay for 10 minutes this morning and he doesn't want to go home.”

Rogerson said this was exactly what the club hoped to achieve for young riders.

"That is the whole idea of it; to get them out there and having fun,” he said.

"A lot of them have never ridden before and now they are having a great time.”

Sean's mum, Renee McCann, said the come-and-try day was a great opportunity to give Sean a chance to ride.

"It's our first time, we just wanted him to learn to ride a bike and I think he is doing pretty good,” she said.

"He hasn't been off it since he has been here.”

While many rode the pee wee bikes for the first time the older kids stepped up to riding a speedway bike.

In the afternoon the club held its first club day of the year.

The next come-and-try day is on May 27.
