Painter reignites old passion

SINCE retirement, photographer Tom Mason has rediscovered his talent for painting.

Mr Mason recently won the Arttime Supplies' annual colour competition with a beautiful landscape painting titled "Where the desert meets the mountains".

"Each year artists pay an entry fee where they get a canvas and a tube of paint that's a particular colour," he said.

"This year's colour was serendipitous sienna, so it had to dominate our entries."

As the competition winner, Mr Mason's works are on display at Arttime Supplies' Drawing Point Gallery from now until Saturday, June 27.

"Painting for me is a self-expression," he said.

"You are getting what's in your head out.

"I make sure I never compare my work to other artists'; we've all got our own style and that's what I tell aspiring painters."

The self-taught painter said he worked fast, completing most of his art in just a couple of hours.

"I'll go back and do some touch-ups if I need to but I like painting quickly," he said.

"I do a lot of paintings sitting out in the country.

"The winning entry was painted on the drive back from Alice Springs about two months ago.

"I was driving through desert when I saw the mountain range."

Mr Mason said art was something he always wanted to do, even as a child.

"I started sketching when I was in primary school and I did some art courses in high school," he said.

"But as I got older, my career got in the way so I left it alone for years.

"One day I was in the city and bought a tube of paint and have been painting again ever since."

The exhibition is open Monday to Friday from 9am-5pm and on Saturday from 9am-1pm.

All of Mr Mason's works are for sale.
