OPINION: New flag would unite Australia

NEW Zealand has shown maturity and respect towards its people by moving to a referendum on removing the Union Jack from their flag.

Regular readers of these pages will know that I am far from an Aboriginal activist or in agreement with the current direction reconciliation is taking, which seems to be throwing unlimited dollars at indigenous Australians in the hope the issue will go away.

We can't change the past nor can we visit the sins of the father upon the sons but we can deal with history as a truth instead of a sanitised fairytale.

This continent was not uninhabited when Britain claimed it as such and set about genocide of the Aboriginal population.

Is it time Australia followed New Zealand's lead and designed a new flag?

The Union Jack on our flag must be a daily reminder to them of these events and many following atrocities, its presence being akin to a swastika on the British flag.

To truly stand as one showing recognition and acceptance of each other with no division or differential treatment one way or the other as citizens, let's replace the Union Jack in the left hand corner of our flag with the Aboriginal banner thus giving us all a proud identity.

To those who will object that thousands have fought and died for our current flag, may I respectfully suggest that it was not that flag but rather the country it represented that they made those sacrifices for and would have done so under whatever flag declared them Australian.
