Offspring is baby-crazy

ASHER Keddie returns to her Gold Logie-winning role in a new baby-crazy series of Offspring.

Keddie's character, Nina, is pregnant and reunited with her beau, Patrick.

Her younger brother, Jimmy, is also adjusting to his new life as a father to baby boy Alfie, with Zara.

And then there's Nina's sister Billie's ongoing fertility issues with husband Mick.

Star Matthew Le Nevez, who plays Dr Patrick Reid, said fans wouldn't have to worry about the stability of Nina and Patrick's relationship this year.

"Our audience got bigger and bigger last year, so we want to give them the respect of delving further into this relationship," he said.

"We're really getting into the nitty gritty of these two people."

Patrick is dealing with the demons of his past, to help strengthen his relationship with Nina and prepare for fatherhood.

"He's coming to grips with his past, whether that's the loss of his child or his wife, and is starting to be able to relate that to Nina," Le Nevez said.

"Patrick has made the conscious choice to be a better partner and a better parent."

Le Nevez said the doctor couple was in a "happier place" this series.

"They went through so much leading up to the finale last year," he told The Guide.

"In the middle of the series last year, there was quite a long, grey cloud hanging over their relationship. They've made a conscious choice to be really active in the relationship. They want to be on the front foot."

Part of the new, motivated Nina and Patrick involves the pair going to couples counselling. Kiwi actor Ido Drent plays their counsellor, Lawrence.

"He's got such a nice, calming energy," Le Nevez said. "I'm looking forward to all the scenes we shot in the counselling sessions. He's such a great actor. One of the great strengths of Offspring is the diversity of its cast. We have such veterans and great new young talent."

Speaking of new additions, the "hot new doctor" mentioned in the show's promos turned out to be a woman - Nina's new registrar, Eloise Ward, played by Caren Pistorius.

Rush star Kevin Hofbauer has also tweeted about starring in the new series, although details are scarce.

"He brings a breath of fresh air to one of the storylines," Le Nevez said.

"He throws a spanner in the works for a few of the characters."
