LAWN BOWLS: Last year's Grundon Fours champions have defended their title.

Blair and Steve Merrell combined with Pittsworth bowlers Darby Coutts and Shane Greentree to win the title at North Toowoomba Bowls Club by the narrowest of margins.

Steve Merrell skipped the side, with father Blair taking the lead bowler role.

The team combined for five wins and a total margins score of plus-52 just one shot ahead of their nearest rivals.

Finishing one shot back were Jake Rynne, Graham Elton, Hayden Vogler and Gary Gray.

Queensland junior representative Vogler and Rynne, who recently won the Australian under-18 pairs championship, were in fine form but were unable to help their team secure the win.

Graeme Kath (North Toowoomba), Steve McNamee (West Toowoomba), Richard Dixon (North Dalby) and Albert Gibbs (Inverell) combined for third place.

North Toowoomba Bowls Club president Cam King said he was delighted with the turnout for the event.

"The Grundon Fours has a great history in the club and now with the generous support of club member, Randy Krause of K & R Plumbing Supplies, the future of the carnival is assured,” he said.

"We had bowlers from throughout the region and NSW playing on quite possibly the best prepared greens in Toowoomba and the equal of any in Queensland.”

King said the club would now build on this success and look to stage more major events that would attract some of the best bowlers in Queensland to the North Toowoomba club.
