No excuses for not teaching kids to swim

AFTER the end of the Second World War when my family went to live and work in Singapore, I was a member of the Singapore Swimming Club and helped to found the teaching of adults and children to swim.

The swimming club had specially-built 10 metre x 30 metre swimming pool for children, attached to the shallow end of the large 50 metre x 30 metre main pool, and a number of us used it to teach children to swim.

We discovered the vast majority of youngsters were not only relatively easy to teach, they we also very keen to learn.

So I am certain that, even if we only use the shallow shore-lined beach for this teaching, the results will be the same - more youngsters who swim well and are knowledgeable about the safety rules.

If it can be done in Singapore, then it certainly can be done wherever the facilities are.
