Nick Kyrgios 'sorry' after crude girlfriend sledge

AUSTRALIAN tennis' new bad boy Nick Kyrgios has been fined $US10,000 for a crude on-court comment about Swiss opponent Stan Wawrinka's girlfriend.

"I would like to take this opportunity to apologise for the comments I made during the match last night (Wednesday) vs Stan," Kyrgios tweeted.

He also posted on Facebook, adding: "My comments were made in the heat of the moment and were unacceptable on many levels."

"In addition to the private apology I've made, I would like to make a public apology as well. I take full responsibility for my actions and regret what happened."

Kyrgios was roundly condemned on social media, even after the apology.

Mandy Charnock wrote: Sorry every time you do something wrong is not acceptable anymore, your attitude is not improving, time to retire, you are not the type of athlete our young people need. Get over yourself

Sammi Blake wrote:  For someone who came out last year with such a great attitude on the tennis court, you are now doing a lot of silly things. Pull your head in, you are a public figure- kids & young adults look up to you. Apologizing is a start, but still a long way to go.

Kyrgios' had claimed during the match that Thanasi Kokkinakis slept with Wawrinka's girlfriend.

While walking to his seat after losing the first-set tiebreak, Kyrgios was heard to say: "Kokkinakis banged your girlfriend, sorry to tell you that mate."

The Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) said on Thursday it had taken action against 20-year-old Kyrgios for the comment at the tennis tournament, which was picked up by a courtside microphone.

"The ATP has announced that Nick Kyrgios has been fined the maximum on-site amount of $US10,000 for an insulting comment he made to Stan Wawrinka during their second round match at the Rogers Cup in Montreal, Canada," an spokeswoman said in a statement.

The ATP said  additional penalties may be forthcoming."
