MOVIE REVIEW: Lights Out plays on your fear of the dark

LIGHTS Out is one scary movie and two Australians have a lot to do with that.

Adelaide native Teresa Palmer stars in the horror film based on director David F Sandberg's terrifying short film of the same name.

Australian horror master James Wan produces the film, which follows a young woman forced to confront the terrors of her childhood when the same things start happening to her younger stepbrother.

They soon discover their fear of what lurks in the shadows is well-founded.

A mysterious and dangerous entity somehow linked to their mother's unstable mental state is becoming more and more aggressive.

The monster can only inflict damage, though, in the dark and all manner of light sources are called upon to combat it.

I watched a good portion of this film between my fingers, which is testament to Sandberg's regular delivery of genuine scares.

You're basically left waiting for something to jump out of every dark nook and cranny and it often does.

Yes this film relies on some horror genre tropes (funny how the lights keep going out) but overall the story is quite intriguing and there's depth to the characters.

This is a supernatural thriller, rather than a slasher film or a gore-fest. The scary moments come from the ever-present threat of attack rather than violence or blood and guts.

If you struggle to make it through a horror film then this one will have you feeling anxious for the entire 81 minutes.

Lights Out opens nationally tomorrow.
