Miss the fish that should swim away

WHILE catching fish may bring shouts of joy, extra care must be taken to not hook the Mary River and Murray cods.

Both species are in spawning season, needing less stress to reproduce.

This year's spawning season closure will last from September 1 to November 30.

Queensland Boating and Fisheries patrol officer Coby Walker said the closures allow more fish for future generations to enjoy.

"For Mary River cod, the closure applies to all Queensland non-tidal waters, including stocked impoundments," Mr Walker said.

Only Queensland waters within the Murray Darling Drainage Division are closed for the fishing of the Murray cod.

But they are still able to be caught and kept at Beardmore, Beehive, Connolly, Cooby, Coolmunda, Glenlyon, Leslie and Storm King dams, where they are stocked.
