Mayor Antonio probes 13-year-old secret proposition
MAYOR Paul Antonio will dust off a 13-year-old secret proposition to build a hydro-electric power project in the Toowoomba region.
Cr Antonio will reveal the mothballed project at the ordinary council meeting this morning, saying the idea could create jobs and generate income for council.
He said the confidential pump storage project was first introduced to the Toowoomba City Council more than a decade ago.
"A proposition came to council in 2004 and I think it was called the Perseverance Cressbrook Pre-Feasibility Pump Storage Project," Cr Antonio said.
"It was predicated on pumping water to a storage at low tariff and returning it at high tariff.
"The world has changed since then, because the difference between low and peak is not that much.
"This is about offering our assets and the land from around those assets to actually allow a private company to come in, generate power so we can generate an income stream for the Toowoomba Regional Council."
Do you think the Toowoomba region can cater for hydro-electric projects?
This poll ended on 15 September 2017.
Yes, it's a great idea
No, there are other industries to invest in
This is not a scientific poll. The results reflect only the opinions of those who chose to participate.
Cr Antonio said a similar project was already in planning in Townsville, adding that the State Government's Powering Queensland Plan made investing in renewable energy more attractive.
"It's not my intention to expose council capital, it's my intention to invite people to come forward," he said.
"I think all we're doing is putting our hand up for the opportunity to be part of this project.
"We've got high hills, dams with a lot of water in them, (and) this will not use up water.
"It's been on my mind for some time, and here is an opportunity with the Powering Queensland Plan.
"I have had a chat with the minister and what we have to offer will be very attractive (to them)."
