Michael Matthews aims for stage win in Tour de France

AFTER a training crash forced him out of last year's Tour de France, Michael Matthews (pictured) will have the chance to claim a stage win in each of the three grand tours when he faces the starter in Utrecht on Saturday.

The 24-year-old Canberran, who will make his Tour debut for the Australian-owned Orica-GreenEDGE team, has already won stages and worn the race leader's jersey in the Giro d'Italia and Vuelta a Espana. Matthews will join fellow Aussies Simon Gerrans and Luke Durbridge in the Orica team.

Seven other Australian riders will contest the race, including Richie Porte who will play the role of super domestique in helping Team Sky's No.1 rider and 2013 winner Chris Froome shoot for his second victory.

The others are: Rohan Dennis (BMC), Nathan Haas (Cannondale-Garmin), Zakkari Dempster (Bora Argon 18), Adam Hansen (Lotto), Mark Renshaw (Etixx-QuickStep) and Michael Rogers (Tinkoff-Saxo).
