Marathon bungle robs 5000 runners of full distance

MORE than 5000 runners took part in the annual Marathon of the North last month, but officials have now revealed that because of a marshalling error, only the winner, Jake Harrison, completed the 42km run from Newcastle to Sunderland.

The others were 264m short because they were given the wrong directions.

The second and third placed runners were not within of sight of Harrison when the error was made.
