Man found guilty of raping stepdaughter

A FORMER Hervey Bay man has been found guilty of maintaining a sexual relationship with his stepdaughter while she was in his care, raping her and attempting to rape her.

The jury in a trial for the 42-year-old man, who cannot be named to protect the identity of his stepdaughter, reached its decision about lunch time yesterday after deliberating for about two days.

Several times the jury asked to re-examine various pieces of evidence, and yesterday they found that out of a total of eight charges, the man was guilty of seven.

The man looked down to the ground as the guilty verdicts were given.

The man molested his stepdaughter in NSW, Caboolture and Deception Bay between 2009 - when the girl was about nine years old - and 2012.

The sexual acts stopped when the man and the girl's mother split up, but he sexually assaulted her when she visited him.

There was an incident in 2012 when he raped her while she was on the lounge at her house and when her siblings were metres away, asleep.

There was also another incident in the same year when she was sleeping at his house and he came in and tried to rape her and she kept rolling over, pretending to be asleep.

It is likely the man will be sentenced today.
