POLICE have charged a man in Mackay Base Hospital over an alleged shootout with officers in South Mackay on Tuesday.

The 33-year-old Eton man has been charged with attempted murder, attempted robbery, seriously assaulting police, unlawfully possessing a Category H weapon, carrying a weapon in a public place, dangerous conduct with a weapon, driving without a licence, stealing and obstructing police.

Police will allege officers were called to an Eton address about midday on Tuesday, after a domestic violence incident was reported.

"When police arrived, they were advised a man involved in the alleged altercation had left the property," Queensland Police Media said.

"Officers later attended an Amiet Street (South Mackay) address where a man allegedly presented a handgun as he fled from the residence.

He was treated at the scene and taken to Mackay Base Hospital.

The Ethical Standards Command is investigating Tuesday's incident, with oversight from the Crime and Corruption Commission.
