Man charged after 'threats to blow up home'

AN axe-wielding man who allegedly threatened to set off explosives during a police stand-off on the Gold Coast has been charged.

Police were called to an Upper Coomera home around 12.20pm on Sunday after reports of a domestic disturbance.

It's alleged the man had made threats, with media reports saying he smashed up the house with an axe and threatened to blow it up.

A declaration was made under the Public Safety Preservation Act around 2.50pm.

The man was taken into custody and the emergency situation was revoked at 7.05pm.

A 27-year-old Upper Coomera man has been charged with one count each of going armed as to cause fear, serious assault police causing bodily harm, willful damage and possession of explosives.

He is due to appear in the Southport Magistrates Court on Monday morning.
