AUSTRALIAN actor Maggie Kirkpatrick has been found guilty of child sex offences, committed 31 years ago.

Kirkpatrick is best known for playing Joan Ferguson or "The Freak" in the hit TV soap opera Prisoner.

ABC reports a Melbourne Magistrate found Kirkpatrick's accuser was "a witness of truth".

She will now be assessed for a Community Corrections Order instead of a prison term.

Kirkpatrick also performed in the Australian production of the musical Wicked and appeared in other TV series such as Water Rates, Home and Away and All Saints.
