Lions lose gun midfielder for the season

BRISBANE midfielder Allen Christensen's season is over before it began.

The 2011 Geelong premiership player will be sidelined for the rest of the year after another drama with his troublesome collarbone.

Christensen first broke his collarbone in round 11 last year against Carlton at Etihad Stadium, which ended his season.

The 25-year-old then suffered another break two months ago to put a significant dent in his preparations for 2017.

He made his comeback to football in the NEAFL last weekend when he had 24 possessions, a goal and 10 tackles against Southport.

But Christensen pulled up sore and was sent for scans, which revealed the bone was intact but a crack had developed in the plate that was strengthening the collarbone.

Given the significant amount of surgery that has already been done on the collarbone, another procedure was ruled out and Christensen and the club are meeting with specialists to plan his return.

Brisbane football general manager David Noble said Christensen's commitment to his rehabilitation had been first-class and the latest injury was a big blow.

"Allen has worked really hard to get back into excellent shape not once, but twice, over the past 12 months, and we are all incredibly disappointed for him," Noble said.

"This is a very unusual problem, certainly one that we have never seen before, and we are frustrated that it's happened, so we will seek some clarity around how it could occur.

"Our overriding concern is for Allen's well-being, and we all agree it's best to take a conservative approach to ensuring he gets back to full fitness.

"We are providing him all the support he needs and Allen has already spoken about channelling his efforts for the rest of the season into continuing to develop the fantastic leadership he has shown in past months."

Christensen has played 33 games for Brisbane since leaving Geelong at the end of 2014 and has 98 senior matches to his name overall.

Brisbane takes on the reigning premier Western Bulldogs at Etihad Stadium on Saturday and should have vice-captain Tom Rockliff at its disposal despite the on-baller suffering a dislocated finger against Richmond on Sunday.
