Let the public pay more while we pay less: business group

A TOP business group has urged the Abbott Government to expand the products and services the GST applies to and cut company tax.

The Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry proposals came in its submission on Friday to the government's tax discussion paper.

Pushing the case for wide tax reform, the lobby group called for the GST to be widened as a first measure and later raised if need be.

The group also urged the government to consider a 5% cut to company tax, from 30% to 25%, despite the government already promising a 2.5% cut to tax for small businesses.

ACCI CEO Kate Carnell said Australia could not afford for "the paralysis in tax reform of the past 15 years to continue".

She said tax reform was a "collective challenge" for business and political leaders, despite the government's election promise not to raise taxes.
