Legal funding approved for Martinez, Barnett murder accused

A TRIAL date for two men accused of murdering Rockhampton friends Robert Martinez and Chantal Barnett is expected to be set by the end of the month.

Lawyers representing Daniel George Hong, 41, and Ian Robert Armstrong, 31, represented the pair in Rockhampton Magistrates Court on Wednesday.

Armstrong's lawyer Grant Cagney told the court Legal Aid had just recently provided him with appropriate funding to cover the legal costs to defend his client.

Magistrate Mark Morrow set a committal mention date, where it is expected a trial date will be set, for March 22, for both men.

They are both charged with two counts of murder.

"There are a large volume of witnesses to cross examine," Mr Cagney said.

Police said in February 2016 that over 600 statements had been taken throughout the course of the investigation.

Robert Martinez's mother Julie last saw her son when he left her home on March 1, 2013.

Human remains were found on a rural property by a south Rockhampton farmer on October 22, 2014, which police identified as being Mr Martinez's. Ms Barnett's remains have not been located.
