Katter kick-starts bat disease fighting fund with $1000

MAVERICK independent MP Bob Katter has set up a fighting fund to help pay for any legal action against the Queensland Government over human deaths caused by flying-fox contracted diseases.

The Katter's Australian Party leader kick-started the fund with a $1000 donation.

His actions came after allegations were aired over the weekend about the cruel death of a Queensland child from the bat-borne lyssavirus.

"What has been described to me as the most moving story in over a decade has prompted me to write this cheque to provide start-up seed money to take legal action upon the next death or serious illness," Mr Katter said.

"This fund will provide money to take an action of criminal negligence over the Queensland Government's failure to take the initiative to remove bats from highly populated areas."

Mr Katter wrote to Premier Campbell Newman earlier this year demanding his government remove existing legal protections for bats, claiming the animals were "causing grief" in communities throughout the state.

He wants the law to be changed to allow landholders to remove bats from their property.
